Dry January: A Trend Worth the Hype

A man, wearing a blue sweatshirt and an orange beanie, is standing in front of a yellow wall. He has a jar of juice in his hand and is smiling.

There’s something about a global trend that excites the public on a level extending far beyond the self. It demonstrates there is power in the collective. This feels true even to a trend, like Dry January, that is largely to promote individual health and wellness; though cultures can benefit from a sober society.

Dry January Origins and Benefits

Dry January is a public health initiative from Alcohol Change UK that began in 2012, which has become increasingly popular over the years. The benefits of not drinking for one month are being shared around the world and people are eager to reap the many benefits of abstaining. According to MSN, this includes, but is not limited to:

  • Better sleep
  • More energy
  • Saving money
  • Clearer skin
  • Improved concentration

You may choose to participate in Dry January because you had over-indulgent holiday celebrations, because you want to examine and challenge your relationship with alcohol, or because you want to be part of a popular trend. No matter what your reason for participating may be, the benefits are sure to make you glad you are.

Navigating Challenges and Building New Habits

Participating in a challenge such as Dry January may bring up feelings and emotions otherwise not expected. If you’re struggling to make it through the month without drinking and are experiencing symptoms of withdrawal, please seek professional help. It may be indicative of an Alcohol Use Disorder, which can have serious side effects if you stop drinking abruptly.

Breaking old habits and forming new ones takes time and patience. If you breeze through the month with ease, continue abstaining another month. Find places to socialize other than a bar and find ways to relax other than a glass of wine. Dry January is about introducing conversations about drinking culture and inspiring positive change!
