International Overdose Awareness Day - August 31, 2025

International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized and honored on August 31 each year. A remembrance that was initiated in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia, International Overdose Awareness has resonated with communities around the globe as we all see our homes, neighborhoods, and schools affected by the public health crisis of substance misuse and overdose.

As we raise awareness, remember and grieve the lives lost, and support survivors of overdose, by coming together as a community, healing can begin. Our theme this year is Driven by Hope – an outlook and reminder that the work being done in our community is making a difference.

The momentum must continue.

Declining Rates of Overdose

According to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, there were an estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths in the United States during 2024 – a decrease of 26.9% from the 110,037 deaths estimated in 2023.

In Milwaukee County, fatal drug overdoses decreased from 668 in 2023 to 466 in 2024, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. While the statistics should leave us feeling optimistic, there is still a lot of work to be done. Milwaukee saw disproportionate numbers across the county, with higher rates of overdose on the South Side and in West Milwaukee than other neighborhoods.

Driven by Hope

Overdose can and must be prevented. We need inclusive and comprehensive health care including services for mental health, prevention education, and accessible harm reduction supplies. We need to share our struggles and our stories to aid in reducing the shame and stigma still so prominently associated with drug use and overdose.

Solutions exist – they must be implemented.

Get Involved

Join RISE Drug Free MKE on August 31 at Washington Park as we come together for a heartfelt gathering that aims to offer love, support, and healing for those affected by overdose. Our International Overdose Awareness Day event will feature brave and inspiring speakers, a Dedication Station, and Candle Memorial Vigil. We invite everyone to attend this important event to raise awareness, share stories, and support each other in our collective community journey toward healing.

When we’re driven by hope, healing is possible.
