Light and Unite Red Week Recap

Light and Unite Red Week 2025, held March 17-23, was a resounding success in promoting substance use prevention and education throughout Milwaukee County. This annual initiative aligns every year with National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, encouraging community members to seek reliable information and challenge misconceptions about alcohol and other drug use.

A Week of Awareness and Education

This year’s theme, MythBusters, aimed to debunk common myths and provide factual information about substance use. RISE Drug Free MKE, along with numerous community organizations and allies, led these efforts through both social media campaigns and in-person events.

A highlight of the week was the Make Milwaukee County Red initiative on March 17 when various buildings illuminated red. This powerful visual statement symbolized a collective commitment to substance use prevention and support for individuals in treatment and recovery. By lighting up the city, community members and organizations demonstrated solidarity and helped raise awareness about the importance of prevention education.

Official Recognition from County Leadership

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley officially proclaimed March 17-23, 2025, as Light and Unite Red Week, encouraging residents to spread awareness, support substance use prevention, and promote recovery to build stronger, healthier communities.

Reflecting on the week’s success, Community Advocates’ Community Outreach and Engagement Manager De’Shawn Ewing remarked, “This was a great year for Light and Unite Red Week. We saw Milwaukee County stand together to raise awareness around the science and facts of substance misuse and prevention. The support of public health professionals, businesses, nonprofits, first responders, and other communities within Milwaukee proved the power of collective efforts.”

A Collective Effort for a Healthier Future

The collaboration and dedication displayed during Light and Unite Red Week 2025 represents the community’s commitment to fostering a healthier, substance-free future for all residents. Thank you to all the community partners, organizations, and allies who hosted or attended events, illuminated your building red, or engaged in a conversation about the facts of substance use.
